A Mother’s Mission: Honoring Her Daughter’s Legacy by Transforming Lives in Uganda

Amy Abinsinguza founded the McKinsey Foundation in honor of her daughter’s memory and dedication to fighting homelessness and poverty in Uganda.

After her 20-year-old daughter, McKinsey Abinsinguza, tragically died in a 2015 car accident, Amy turned her grief into a mission. McKinsey had been deeply involved in missionary work in Uganda, where she helped build a home for young boys living on the streets of Kampala, the capital city.

McKinsey had planned to return to Uganda full-time as a missionary. After the accident, Amy traveled to Uganda to experience the country and meet the people who had profoundly impacted her daughter’s life.

That initial visit to Uganda, and her encounters with the children who meant so much to McKinsey, inspired Amy to establish the McKinsey Foundation. The nonprofit is dedicated to helping homeless Ugandan children, focusing on providing immediate needs like food and shelter, and offering education with the ultimate goal of reuniting these children with their families.

The house McKinsey helped build during her first mission trip was later named in her honor and continues to be supported by the foundation.

“At the McKinsey House, we help these children transition to a more stable environment and develop social skills beyond the survival tactics they learned on the streets,” Amy said.

Amy spent three months in Uganda, where she deepened her commitment to the cause. “I know McKinsey has left this earth, but her legacy of faith lives on,” Amy said. “I found all of that, plus so much more, in Uganda.”
